What would you do if you had spent years studying agriculture, finally found a job in your field, and were still earning just ₹13,000 a month? For Sonu Kumar, the answer was to look beyond what was familiar. Today, he is working in Japan’s agriculture sector, earning almost ten times what he earned back home. But his story isn't really about going to Japan. It is about what he hopes to bring back with him.

Sonu grew up in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, in a family where working abroad was already part of life. His father had worked overseas, and his brothers had built careers of their own in different parts of the world and in India. So the idea of working abroad wasn't completely new to Sonu. What was new was the possibility of using international work not just to earn more, but to learn something that could eventually help him build something of his own.

After completing his Bachelor's and Master's in Agricultural Sciences, Sonu began working as an Agriculture Supervisor with the Birla Group in Kushinagar. His work involved working with farmers and helping them improve crop management and cultivation practices. It was work connected to what he had studied, and he enjoyed it. But at around ₹13,000 a month, he knew that his ambitions were bigger than what his current income could offer.

Then a professor told him about opportunities in Japan's agriculture sector through the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

It sounded promising. It also came with a fairly big challenge: Japanese.

Sonu enrolled in a Japanese language programme in Varanasi. For six months, he worked on the language, followed by further preparation for the certification exams. Hiragana and Katakana were only the beginning. Kanji proved much harder. He didn't clear everything on his first attempt either. But instead of treating the failure as a reason to stop, he went back, prepared again and eventually cleared the required language certification and the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) examination.

Then came the interview with Persol Global Workforce. This time, the opportunity was real.

His first posting was at a potato processing facility in Hokkaido, where he worked alongside six other Indian workers. The first few weeks brought a different kind of learning. Japanese sounded very different when people were speaking quickly at work rather than slowly in a classroom. Even simple everyday routines took time to understand. There was a new workplace, a new country, a new language and a completely different way of life to get used to.

His work took him from the potato processing facility to a seasonal orange farm and eventually to a one-year contract in Ibaraki Prefecture, near Tokyo. Along the way, his employer helped with many of the practical challenges of settling in, including housing, airport pickup and transportation between postings. Sonu even received a company vehicle and began learning to drive in Japan.

And then there was the financial difference.

The ₹13,000 salary he once earned in Kushinagar had become almost ten times higher in Japan. A significant part of his earnings goes back to his family in India, while he uses the rest for his life in Japan. His employment also provides health insurance, pension and social security.

For his family, that change matters. But for Sonu, the money is only one part of the story.

Because he doesn't see Japan as the final destination.

His long-term plan is to return to India and start his own agricultural business. He wants to bring back the techniques, mechanisation and production practices he is learning in Japan and apply them to agriculture in his own community. The goal is not simply to earn abroad. It is to take that experience and turn it into something that can create value back home.

And that is what makes Sonu's journey interesting.

His story begins with a young agriculture graduate in Kushinagar looking for a better opportunity. It takes him through language classes in Varanasi, a difficult exam, a new life in Japan and a series of jobs across its agricultural sector. But it doesn't end there.

The hope is that one day, the journey will come full circle.

For Sonu, international mobility isn't about choosing between home and the world. It is about using the world to create something at home.

From Kushinagar to Japan: Learning, Earning, and Looking Back Home.

A career does not always begin with a big ambition. Sometimes, it begins with a simple decision: learn a skill, find a job and build a better future. For Shreenath Das, that decision began in Cuttack, Odisha, when he joined Madhusudan Government ITI after completing Class 10 in 2020. What followed was a journey that took him from technical training in India to international experience in Singapore and facility management in Dubai—and eventually gave him the confidence to think about building something of his own.

Shreenath’s first step was the Fitter trade at Madhusudan Government ITI. He later went on to the World Skill Center, where he completed an Advanced Certificate in Mechanical & Electrical Services Facility Maintenance. This gave him exposure to mechanical and electrical systems as well as the wider work involved in keeping buildings and facilities running. His training was not just about learning a trade; it gave him a foundation that he could build on as his career developed.

I chose to invest in my skills before investing in my salary.

The next opportunity took Shreenath beyond India. In October 2023, at the age of 19, he moved to Singapore for a seven-month internship with LAN System Engineering. He worked across three commercial buildings and gained practical experience in MEP systems, preventive maintenance and inspections of electrical panels, HVAC and lighting systems.

For Shreenath, the experience offered something that a classroom could not. He was able to see how technical work was carried out in an international environment and understand the importance of workplace safety, processes and standards. It also gave him a first glimpse of what a career could look like beyond the place where he had started.

When he returned to India, he joined Tata Steel Technical Services Limited in May 2024 as an Assistant Technical and took on shift-in-charge responsibilities. His work involved supervising technicians and vendor personnel, managing SAP PM work orders and working across industrial equipment and maintenance operations. His responsibilities were gradually changing, and with every role, he was moving from simply doing technical work towards taking responsibility for people, systems and operations.

In October 2025, another international opportunity took him to Dubai, where he joined Emrill Services. His work brought him into major developments including Dubai Creek Harbour and Expo City Dubai. He worked on MEP operations, coordinated teams and contractors, managed planned and reactive maintenance, and worked within international permit-to-work and HSE requirements.

This experience marked another stage in his career. The skills he had developed through his ITI education and specialised training were now being used in a much larger and more complex working environment. His role was increasingly about coordination, problem-solving and making sure that operations continued smoothly.

Today, Shreenath works as a Maintenance Coordinator at MFMC Maintenance LLC, where he coordinates facility maintenance across 106 residential and commercial properties in Dubai’s Business Bay. He supervises eight technicians, manages work orders, coordinates vendors and contractors, oversees preventive maintenance and also supports tenant and customer relations.

His journey reflects a gradual shift in the kind of work he does—from technical work on the ground to supervising people, coordinating operations and managing responsibilities across multiple properties. What began with a practical skill at an ITI has developed into a professional career in international facility management.

There is another part of Shreenath’s story that is easy to overlook when talking about international careers. His journey has not only changed his own professional life; it has also created opportunities for his family back home.

Shreenath continues to support his younger brother’s education. After his father suffered an injury, he also took a restaurant on lease in his hometown for his father to run. His experience and earnings abroad have therefore found their way back into his family and community in Cuttack.

This is one of the ways in which the impact of mobility can extend beyond the person who moves. A job in another country can mean greater financial security for a family, but it can also bring back new ideas, confidence and the willingness to invest in something closer to home.

For Shreenath, that next step is entrepreneurship.

From working for others to building something of his own

Over the years, working in facilities management gave Shreenath an idea. He saw the systems and services being delivered around him and began wondering whether he could create something himself.

We are doing all this in facilities here. Why can’t I do it in my own country? Why can’t I do it for myself?

That question has now become a new chapter in his journey. Shreenath has begun his entrepreneurial journey as a co-founder of AAVARÉ, a venture rooted in Odisha’s heritage. Starting with the traditional Puri Khaja, AAVARÉ aims to preserve the character of the iconic delicacy while presenting it in a way that can connect with a new generation and a wider audience.

For someone who began his career by learning a practical trade, becoming an entrepreneur is a significant change. But the experiences that came before it have helped shape that decision. His training gave him technical skills, his work in India gave him responsibility, and his international experience exposed him to new ways of working and thinking. Together, these experiences have helped him move from asking where his next job might be to thinking about what he could build himself.

Shreenath’s journey also shows why skills mobility is about more than simply moving a worker from one country to another. Behind his journey are several connected parts of an ecosystem: vocational education, specialised training, industry experience, international exposure and opportunities to use those skills in new environments.

An ITI gave him his starting point. The World Skill Center helped him develop specialised capabilities. Employers in India and abroad gave him opportunities to apply those skills and take on greater responsibility. International mobility exposed him to different workplaces and standards. Over time, these experiences helped him develop not only professionally, but also personally.

That is what makes a skills journey meaningful. The outcome is not always visible at the beginning. A young person may start by looking for a job, but the right combination of training, experience and opportunity can open up much more—a better career, greater support for a family, new ideas and eventually the confidence to create opportunities of their own.

Shreenath’s journey began in Cuttack with a decision to learn a skill. It took him to Singapore, then to Dubai, and now towards entrepreneurship in Odisha. His story is a reminder that when education, industry and international opportunities connect, mobility can become more than a pathway to employment. It can become a pathway to possibility.

From Cuttack to Dubai: When Skills Create More Than a Career

For Shailendra Morra, working at a solar plant in Saudi Arabia may seem a long way from where his journey began. But the move did not happen overnight.

It started with an ITI qualification in Uttar Pradesh, followed by years of work in Gujarat and experience with some of India’s biggest companies. Along the way, Shailendra built something that would later help him take the next step: technical experience, confidence and savings.

After completing his ITI training, Shailendra moved to Gujarat for work. He spent around three years with L&T and Reliance, followed by another three years with NTPC. Working as an electrician gave him practical experience across different workplaces and helped him save for his future.

Then, an opportunity through 2Coms took him to Saudi Arabia.

Today, Shailendra works at a solar plant there, bringing the skills he developed in India into a growing renewable energy sector.

Moving abroad can mean adjusting to a new language, culture and way of working. For Shailendra, however, the transition has been relatively comfortable.

He works alongside people from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, so communication has not been a major challenge. He also says he has not experienced any significant cultural differences at work.

In some ways, his workplace in Saudi Arabia feels familiar.

His job also provides food and accommodation, which has helped keep his living expenses low. He works in shifts, with a break between 12 pm and 3 pm before returning for the second part of his working day.

On average, Shailendra spends only around 100–200 Saudi Riyals a month on personal expenses. A portion of his earnings goes back to his family in India, while he saves the rest.

Before moving to Saudi Arabia, Shailendra was earning around ₹18,000 a month at NTPC.

His basic salary in Saudi Arabia is around 1,100 SAR. With overtime, particularly on Fridays, his monthly earnings can reach around 2,000 SAR  approximately ₹50,000.

But for Shailendra, the difference is not only in the salary.

With food and accommodation covered by his employer, he does not have to spend a large part of his income on everyday living costs. This allows him to save more and continue supporting his family in India.

There is another part of this transition that matters to him: he did not need to take a loan to make the move.

The savings he built during his years with NTPC, L&T and Reliance helped him finance his move himself.

Saudi Arabia may be Shailendra’s current destination, but he is already thinking about what comes next.

He plans to stay in Saudi Arabia for around two more years. After that, he hopes to explore opportunities in Australia or Europe and continue building his career internationally.

He knows that reaching that next stage will require preparation. He is planning to pursue further training through NSDC as he works towards strengthening his skills for future opportunities.

From an ITI in Uttar Pradesh to Gujarat, from some of India’s largest companies to a solar plant in Saudi Arabia, Shailendra’s path shows how technical skills can travel far beyond the place where they were first learned.

And perhaps that is what makes his story worth telling.

An opportunity abroad is not always the end goal. Sometimes, it is simply the next step one that allows a skilled worker to gain experience, support a family, build savings and begin imagining where their skills could take them next.

From Uttar Pradesh to a Solar Plant in Saudi Arabia

When Deep Patel left Nashik for New Zealand, he knew he was going abroad to build a career. What he did not know was how much he would learn about work, communication, independence and himself.

For Deep Patel, hospitality was never just another career option.

From a young age, he was interested in the world of hotels and the people who worked in it. He liked the energy of the industry, the interaction with people and the feeling that there was always something new to learn. Growing up in Nashik, Maharashtra, he began to see hospitality as a field that could take him beyond what he already knew.

That interest eventually brought him to Parul University, where he pursued a Diploma in Hotel Management and Catering Technology, with a specialisation in Food & Beverage Services and Housekeeping. His training also included industrial experience at Radisson Blu, giving him an early understanding of what working in hospitality looked like beyond the classroom.

But somewhere along the way, another ambition began to take shape.

The opportunity came while he was still in college

In 2025, while studying at Parul University, Deep came across an opportunity to pursue hospitality training in New Zealand. He had also considered Australia, but when the opportunity through his college came up, he decided to apply.

The process was not simply a matter of getting on a flight. There were interviews, documentation, preparation and several steps before the move became real. For Deep, each stage was part of getting ready for a workplace and a life that would be very different from the one he knew in India.

Eventually, he arrived in Kaikōura and began on-the-job training in the Housekeeping department at Sudima Hotel.

He had made it to New Zealand. The real learning was just beginning.

The first thing he had to learn was how people spoke

Before leaving India, Deep knew that communication could be one of his biggest challenges.

He had already learnt English, but the New Zealand accent was unfamiliar. So, like many young people preparing for a new country, he turned to the internet. He watched YouTube videos and Instagram content, trying to get used to the way people spoke and the pace of conversations.

In the first few weeks, conversations could move much faster than he expected. Sometimes he understood the words but still had to work out what had been said as a whole. The pace of spoken English was very different from what he was used to in India.

There was no special language course that prepared him for it. Instead, Deep learnt the way people often learn the things that matter most: by doing them.

He listened carefully. He asked people to repeat themselves. He asked them to slow down when necessary. His colleagues were patient, and slowly the unfamiliar accent stopped sounding so unfamiliar.

What felt difficult in the beginning became easier with every conversation.

For Deep, one of the biggest lessons was simple: confidence does not always come before the experience. Sometimes, it comes because of the experience.

The differences were not limited to language.

The workplace culture in New Zealand also surprised him.

Having already seen how hospitality worked in India, Deep had expected long hours, a demanding pace and a more formal relationship between employees and managers. Instead, he found a workplace where working hours were more structured and where there was a stronger sense of balance between work and personal life.

Even the way people addressed each other felt different. In India, calling a senior person “sir” or “boss” can feel natural. In New Zealand, Deep found that managers and colleagues often addressed one another simply by their first names. At first, that felt unusual. Over time, it became normal.

These small differences taught him that moving abroad is not only about learning how to perform a job in another country. It is also about learning the everyday habits and expectations that shape another workplace.

Coming from India, Deep was accustomed to a much busier environment. Kaikōura felt almost the opposite.

There were fewer people, less noise and a much slower pace of life. The quietness was one of the first things he noticed.

At first, adjusting to that was difficult.

Eventually, it became one of the things he liked most.

The slower pace gave him a different experience of everyday life. Away from the crowds and familiarity of home, he also began becoming more comfortable doing things independently managing his time, managing his money and making decisions for himself.

Living abroad was teaching him things that were not part of his hospitality curriculum.

The numbers changed. So did the way he thought about money.

When Deep looks back at his journey, the financial difference is impossible to ignore.

During his hospitality training in India, he earned around ₹4,500 a month. Today, as a Housekeeping Trainee in New Zealand, he earns NZ$24.50 an hour.

But he does not describe the change simply as earning more.

The cost of living in New Zealand is higher, which means saving requires planning. Rent, food, travel and everyday expenses all have to be considered. Still, the move has given Deep something he values greatly: greater financial independence.

He is able to manage his own expenses and, importantly, save.

That saving has also begun influencing how he thinks about his future.

Deep is already considering the possibility of using what he saves to explore another country and another opportunity.

New Zealand, in his mind, does not have to be the final destination.

The real investment was bigger than the ₹6 lakh

The move itself involved a significant financial commitment.

Deep's total cost was approximately ₹6 lakh, including the various expenses associated with the programme, travel, visa, documentation and training. He did this without taking an education loan.

For a young professional beginning his career, that is a considerable investment.

But the return is not something he measures only in currency.

He has gained international workplace experience. He has learnt to communicate with people from a different cultural background. He has become more comfortable adapting to unfamiliar situations. He has gained confidence in his own ability to settle into a new environment.

And he has started to understand what kind of professional he wants to become.

Deep does not pretend that he has everything figured out.

He is still learning. He is still finding his way.

His focus now is on building his skills further, especially his communication and spoken language. He wants to improve his accent and pronunciation, strengthen his professional abilities and eventually learn another language.

The goal is not simply to collect countries.

Each new environment, he believes, can teach him something that he can carry forward.

That way of thinking has changed what “going abroad” means for him. It is no longer just about leaving India for a better salary or a different lifestyle. It is about building a career that can keep moving.

Deep's story began in Nashik with an interest in hospitality.

It continued at Parul University, where he built his foundation through formal education and industrial training. An opportunity through the university took him to New Zealand, where the learning became more personal.

He had to listen differently. Work differently. Communicate differently. Adjust to a new culture. Get used to a quieter life. Manage his finances. And, perhaps most importantly, trust that he could find his place in an unfamiliar environment.

None of these changes happened overnight.

They happened one conversation, one shift and one new experience at a time.

Today, Deep is earning NZ$24.50 an hour, gaining international experience and thinking about where his next opportunity might take him.

And that may be the most interesting part of it.

Because sometimes, a career is not built around one big decision. It is built through a series of smaller ones—the decision to learn, to apply, to leave what is familiar, to adapt when things become difficult, and to keep looking ahead.

For Deep, New Zealand is one of those steps.

The next one is already somewhere on the horizon.

My goal was never just to work abroad. It was to keep learning. Every experience helps me build the skills, confidence and savings for the next opportunity, wherever that may be.

From Nashik to New Zealand: Learning to Find His Way in a New World

For Anjeep Thapa, the journey to Kuwait was supposed to mark a new beginning. He had built his experience, taken up opportunities in different parts of India and gone through the recruitment process. By November 2025, everything seemed to be falling into place. Through 2COMS, Anjeep was selected for a sales position in Kuwait, with his departure initially planned for January.

Then, the situation in the region changed.

As conflict and instability affected the Gulf, his travel plans were disrupted. The journey he had been preparing for suddenly had to be put on hold. His selection remained, but the timeline changed. What was supposed to be the next step in his career became a period of waiting and uncertainty.

For someone preparing to leave home and begin working in another country, a delay like this can be difficult. Plans that once seemed certain suddenly become unclear. Travel dates change, arrangements have to be reconsidered and there is always the question of when the opportunity will finally become possible.

Anjeep, however, stayed with the process. He waited for the situation to stabilise. When travel became possible again, he finally made his way to Kuwait and began the job he had been selected for months earlier.

Anjeep's journey to Kuwait was not the beginning of his working life. It was the result of several years of experience across different places and sectors in India.

Originally from West Bengal, Anjeep completed his BA Honours degree before entering the workforce. His career took him through different kinds of work, including the Merchant Navy, before he moved into sales. He worked in Kerala and Delhi, gaining experience in customer-facing roles and learning to adapt to different workplaces and environments.

Moving from one city to another meant constantly adjusting to new people, new responsibilities and new surroundings. Over time, those experiences became part of the professional foundation he carried with him when he eventually decided to work abroad.

Today, Anjeep works as a salesman at Grand Hyper in Kuwait. His role is centred around customers, communication and sales. Much of his working day involves assisting customers and managing sales, making communication an essential part of his everyday work.

Working in a new country also meant adapting to a different social and linguistic environment. Anjeep is familiar with English and Arabic, while Hindi and English are particularly useful in his everyday interactions outside the workplace.

He did not undergo formal language training before travelling to Kuwait. Instead, much of his adaptation happened through everyday experience. Conversations with customers, interactions with colleagues and simply navigating life in a new country helped him become more comfortable with his surroundings.

For Anjeep, settling into Kuwait was therefore not just about starting a new job. It was also about learning how to function confidently in an unfamiliar environment.

One of the things that has made the transition easier is the practical support provided by his employer. His accommodation and food are provided by the company, while transportation and workplace facilities are also part of his employment.

For someone moving thousands of kilometres away from home, these details matter. Having accommodation and food covered reduces some of the immediate financial pressure of starting life in another country. It also gives a new worker some stability while they adjust to their surroundings and settle into their job.

The move has also changed Anjeep's earning environment. Before leaving India, he was earning around ₹24,000 per month. In Kuwait, he now earns around 110 Kuwaiti dinars per month.

His savings are still modest, but the opportunity has given him something that goes beyond the monthly figure. He is gaining international work experience, working in a different market and learning to navigate a professional environment outside India. With accommodation and food provided by his employer, some of the major costs associated with relocating abroad are also reduced.

More than a journey from one country to another

Indian workers have been moving to the Gulf for decades, making corridors such as India-Kuwait an established part of global labour mobility. But behind every large mobility corridor are individual stories, and those stories rarely follow a perfectly straight path.

His journey began in West Bengal, continued through education and work, took him to Kerala and Delhi, and eventually led him to Kuwait. There were changes in sectors, changes in cities and an unexpected regional crisis that forced him to delay the international move he had been preparing for.

But the opportunity remained. And when the road opened again, he took it.

Today, the uncertainty surrounding his departure has been replaced by the everyday rhythm of working life in Kuwait. Customers, conversations, sales and another day at work have become part of his new routine.

Perhaps that is what makes his story particularly meaningful. Global mobility is often described through numbers, destinations and labour demand. But for an individual, it is much more personal. It is about making plans, dealing with uncertainty, waiting when circumstances demand it and finding the confidence to start again when the opportunity finally arrives.

Anjeep's journey was delayed, but it was not derailed.

He waited for the opportunity, crossed the distance and started again. The road changed. The destination did not.

From West Bengal to Kuwait: A Journey Delayed, Not Derailed

For many nurses, Germany represents an opportunity to build a more stable future. For Aniket Sanade, it was a goal he had to work towards for years.

His journey from Kolhapur to Munich was not a straight path. It involved failed language examinations, financial setbacks, unreliable agencies, documentation delays and the challenge of learning not just a new language, but an entirely different way of working.

Today, Aniket works as a nurse in Munich. But the most meaningful part of his story may be what he chose to do after getting there.

Aniket already had a nursing background and experience working at hospitals including Lilawati and Jupiter in Mumbai when he began exploring opportunities in Germany.

Like many candidates, he started learning German online. The first few months were difficult. The language was unfamiliar, and understanding German in a professional healthcare setting came with its own challenges.

The journey that was initially expected to take around 12–18 months eventually stretched to almost three years.

There were years when the language examinations did not go as planned. Financial difficulties added another layer of pressure. At one point, Aniket also encountered fraudulent online courses, making an already complicated process even more difficult.

What made the journey particularly challenging was that learning German was only one part of the process. Candidates also have to understand documentation, qualification recognition, visa requirements and the German examination system. For someone navigating all of this from India, even finding reliable information can become a challenge.

Reaching Germany did not mean the difficult part was over.

The first few months brought a different set of challenges: communicating in German, understanding workplace expectations, adapting to a new culture and finding confidence in a healthcare environment that operated differently from what he had known in India.

For Aniket, language remained one of the biggest barriers.

It was not simply about knowing German words. It was about understanding what people meant, communicating with colleagues and patients, and becoming comfortable enough to do his job in another language.

With experience and immersion, the unfamiliar began to become familiar. Aniket continued working towards formal recognition as a registered nurse while building his professional life in Germany.

Today, he works in Munich and earns around €2,500–€3,000 gross per month. Nursing remains a high-demand profession in Germany, particularly in senior care, with opportunities also existing across other healthcare-related fields.

But for Aniket, professional stability was not the end of the story.

It became the beginning of something else.

After experiencing the difficulties of the process himself, Aniket decided to help others avoid the same mistakes.

He went on to establish Nursinex, a training and language institute focused on supporting aspiring nurses who want to pursue opportunities in Germany.

The idea comes directly from his own experience.

Having struggled with language examinations, documentation, misinformation and unreliable sources, Aniket understood what many candidates needed most: clear information and someone they could trust.

His aim is to help candidates prepare for the realities of the journey before they make the move from language and documentation to understanding the qualification process and navigating the transition into Germany.

In that sense, his journey has come full circle.

The challenges that once slowed him down have become the experiences he can now use to prepare someone else.

Aniket's story reflects a larger reality of global healthcare mobility.

The demand for nurses and healthcare professionals creates genuine opportunities across borders. But the existence of an opportunity does not automatically make the journey easy.

For candidates, mobility can involve language learning, qualification recognition, paperwork, visa processes, financial costs and cultural adjustment — often all at once.
