Twin City Brand Audit

Gati Foundation, along with student volunteers from Doon University, organised Uttarakhand’s first Twin City Waste & Brand Audit at Haridwar and Rishikesh to identify and document the brands contributing the most to plastic pollution in the state. Volunteers picked up plastic garbage from dumpsites for the purpose of identifying the major brands responsible for the plastic pollution in the city.

Clean Air Campaign

Gati Foundation launched a Clean Air Campaign for Dehradun this Diwali. As city geared up to celebrate the festival, air quality became an important environmental concern. With an inefficient air quality data monitoring system in Uttarakhand, Gati Foundation tried to monitor air quality in a robust, digital and real time manner. The objective of the campaign was to record the results between the pre and post Diwali days.

How Walkable is Dehra Dun?

This was first of its kind Walkability survey carried out by the foundation in Uttarakhand. The survey was aimed at understanding and evaluating the current infrastructure provided for safe and secure walking in the city of Dehradun. The survey was based on various professional parameters and globally accepted guidelines. Gati Foundation divided areas into four categories: Commercial, Residential, Educational and Transit Junctions and three locations under each category was targeted by the foundation for compiling its results on the survey. The entire exercise was carried out by Shreya Bhargava, a student of Masters in Architecture (with specialization in Urban Design) from Ansal University, Noida. With more and more people migrating to the urban areas, creating improved and efficient pedestrian network is an essential requisite. This will not only ensure an eco-friendly city planning but will also make it more liveable and sustainable.

Choked Doon: A Study on Air Pollution in Dehradun

Gati Foundation, a research and policy-oriented, and evidence-based think tank has committed itself to intervene and work towards addressing the problem with possible solutions and recommendations to the government and civil society. The team initiated a field study to interview about 50 people in various regions of Dehradun (ISBT, Saharanpur Chowk, Clock Tower, Prince Chowk, Railway Station, Balliwala, Ballupur, and Tehsil). In order to develop an understanding of citizen’s awareness level and their perception on the gravity of the issue of air pollution, its ramifications, Gati Foundation conducted a rapid study in Dehradun. The study was focussed and confined to the assessment of people’s understanding on causative factors, the trend over a time span and remedial aspects vis-a-vis air-pollution.

Toilet Manifesto Understanding Policy Outlook, Key Challenges and Opportunities in the Sector of Public Sanitation

This paper tries to present a holistic outlook to the subject of public sanitation. It engages with the topic at various levels. Firstly, the report highlights the international scenario with respect to the public sanitation. Secondly, it covers the Indian policy perspective on the subject matter of public sanitation. It discusses various national missions and campaigns that were launched by the government in order to introduce reforms in the sector of water and sanitation. Lastly, the paper examines the Uttarakhand state scenario with respect to the public sanitation. The paper lays down the components of various programmes that were launched by the state government. The paper presents a unique approach by highlighting four different case studies from four different states. The last case study (number four) is of Dehradun and is conducted by Gati Foundation as a part of conducting the social audit for the public toilets of Dehradun. In the end, the paper suggests some practical and innovative set of recommendations to overcome the challenges that are persisting in this sector of water and sanitation.

Brief Summary of the Report- Last year, in Swachh Survekshan 2017, all the cities and towns of Uttarakhand performed very poorly. Our research revealed that various factors contributed towards the poor rankings of the cities. Some of the prominent factors were: low level of awareness about the survey, low level of public engagement, widespread open defecation zones, and poor maintenance of public/community toilets.

Gati Foundation (www.gatifoundation.org) has been a consistent, concerned and vocal stakeholder on the issue of Solid Waste Management (SWM). Gati has been consistently researching upon various aspects of SWM in the state of Uttarakhand. Therefore, we at gati decided to study the portal of Swachhata Analytics in detail and compile the results available for the cities of Uttarakhand so that the stakeholders and citizens can identify the issues and prepare the interventions accordingly.

Public Parks are much more than islands of green in concrete jungles of cities and towns of today’s urban environment. They are a place for people from all walks of life to exercise, morning walks, picnics, get-together, and just enjoy nature.

Gati Foundation, a research and policy-oriented, evidence-based and “go-to-ground” think tank, has committed itself to identifying better urban living solutions. For this, the team conducted a social audit to learn what exactly the authorities have been doing when it comes to maintenance of our public parks in Dehra Dun. The parks in the city come either under the direct purview of the Nagar Nigam, or Resident Welfare Societies of the respective Areas. Our team covered over 20 Parks, located in various areas in the city such as GMS Road, Vasant Vihar, Indira Nagar, Seema Dwar, Shimla Bypass, Nehru Colony, Rajpur Road etc.
